A Summer Encounter · Cross-Cultural Exchange Across Borders: Annika's Farewell Reflection in HUST

Here is Annika’s reflection on her study and research experience at HUST. With heartfelt words, she captured her first impressions of Wuhan, her daily life on campus, her rich cultural experiences, and her academic growth. Let’s take a closer look at her journey and reflections during the summer program!

Annika’s Reflections

Thoroughly enjoyed my time at HUST and have felt unbelievably welcome my entire time being in China. I had never had the opportunity before to travel to East Asia and this whole experience has been incredible. My research at Hust has pushed me to explore in much greater detail concepts in machine learning that go well beyond the curriculum taught to me in university. This has helped strengthen my understanding and confidence on coding as well as introducing me to how research is conducted. My project in energy forecasting allowed me to develop previous research done by the group as well as understand further why this work is important in order to reduce energy consumption.

The Hust campus was incredibly beautiful with all the possible facilities we required. The international accommodation was especially well located with very close proximity to great study spaces, coffee shops and canteens. As well as this it was extremely easy to cycle around campus which spanned a great distance. I especially enjoyed cycling to the far side of the campus with my lab group to see all the campus had to offer.

Being a part of the ICARE department was brilliant and they made sure to give all of us interns the best experience ever. Over the span of 2 weeks, they organised daily academic and cultural activities that really immersed us into life in China as well as teaching us more about the renewable energy in China. The organised activities including Chinese orchestra, pastry making mandarin lessons and kung fu were extremely fun and helped us learn more about Chinese culture. As well as this the enterprise visits were insightful and was a good look into the future of tech in China. I especially enjoyed the enterprise visit in Wuhan to see the MHero office and car showroom where we were able to go on a test drive then also later experience driverless cars.

The opportunity to stay in China was amazing and one of the main highlights was being able to travel around China. The weekends were a great opportunity to experience the huge range of nature and cities that China has to offer. Wuhan itself has an amazing location as it is in the centre of China and gives you easy access to cities all around China. The highlights of our travels included being to go with Icare to Nanjing on an enterprise visit then being able to spend the remainder of the weekend in shanghai. Wuhan itself had so much to offer and seeing the yellow crane tower at night as well as cycling around east lake during sunset were unforgettable experiences.

Finally I would like to thank my student helper tommy who has been of tremendous help over the last few weeks from organising out arrival at Hust to making sure we settled into accommodation. As well as this he organised weekly meetings and presentations with our lab group that allowed us to be able understand more about the research conducted by the other PHD students as well as present our progress so far. It also allowed us an opportunity to explain more about our life in England and experiences studying in the UK and have a cultural exchange with Chinese students learning about different festivals, local specialities as well as the history of icare and student life at HUST. Thank you also to Professor Chen for the opportunity to study and research here and to work on a project meaningful to the future of renewable energy.
